It Is To Laugh!

I posted earlier on John McCain’s inability to lie about his insane desire to turn this country into Alto Mexico here. Well Jim Geraghty at NRO’s Campaign Spot put a call in to the campaign to ‘clarify’ things. Here is the original statement…

“Senator Kennedy and I tried very hard to get immigration reform, a comprehensive plan, through the Congress of the United States,” he said. “It is a federal responsibility and because of our failure as a federal obligation, we’re seeing all these various conflicts and problems throughout our nation as different towns, cities, counties, whatever they are, implement different policies and different programs which makes things even worse and even more confusing.”

He added: “I believe we have to secure our borders, and I think most Americans agree with that, because it’s a matter of national security. But we must enact comprehensive immigration reform. We must make it a top agenda item if we don’t do it before, and we probably won’t, a little straight talk, as of January 2009.”

Mr. McCain asked others on the panels for suggestions about how to “better mobilize American public opinion” behind the notion of comprehensive immigration reform.

Seems pretty clear and straightforward, no? Heh, let the lying begin

Team McCain tells me the senator’s comments were poorly worded. There’s been no discussion within the campaign of altering their stance on illegal immigration, and as far as everyone on the campaign is concerned, the policy is still, ’secure the border first.’

One wonders if “everybody” includes the candidate?

As Ace notes

Personally, I am glad Maverick is back and telling us what he really believes and wants. It makes it easier to not vote for him and ultimately it’s better for him. No one was buying his conversion and he looked silly trying to sell it. Better we are all honest about what our choices are this November. In reality though, I am sure most people have factored McCain’s true stance on immigration into their voting decision for awhile now.

That sounds about right to me, if your voting for McCain there’s really only three options: you support amnesty, you don’t support amnesty but think he’s better enough on other issues to make it worthwhile voting for him, or you have no idea where he actually stands (and if you get your information from the ‘Three Monkey Media’ how would you know?)

Ed Morrisey is selling the “tastier crap sandwich” routine here. (Boo! We miss Bryan!)

It really was almost painful to watch McCain try to lie on this issue, take the hit like a man John, to thine own self be true. If you really think turning this country into Upper Mexico is the way to go, fine, pony up and tell the voters that, what’s that? You can’t get elected on that platform? In fact it took you lying through your teeth to make is as far as you have?

Not my problem. Maybe McCain would be better on other issues, seems to me though that a willingness to lie this obviously isn’t exactly a good harbinger of things to come.
