Pro-Israel vs. Pro-Palestine Protests in Chicago

Video added below…
A very large Pro-Palestine protest was mounted in Chicago today, with participants being bused in from other cities and states (we heard one organizer gathering people who “were on the bus from Milwaukee”). Jake covered a similar but much smaller protest earlier in the week.
Today was definitely the main event — the Hamas supporters gathered in front of Chicago’s famous Tribune Building, then marched across the Chicago River and around the corner to the Israeli Consulate. A good-sized crowd was already in place across the street to offer their support for Israel.
We wandered around in both crowds taking pics and video for a while. We had our press ID badges on, but were still told we had to “choose a side” when the loonies got ready to begin their march to the Israeli consulate. The police hustled us off behind their barricades post haste…just in case you were wondering if bloggers are still largely considered to be “second class journalists” — the answer is YES!
Jake will have video up after a while. Until then, I’ll let the pictures speak for themselves, for the most part, and keep my witty commentary to a minimum.
The Pro-Israel Crowd
The Anti-Israel Crowd
I found this image pretty striking — the juxtaposition of a slice of Americana and savages calling for jihad in a foreign language on the streets of Chicago.
And who doesn’t love to see this symbol of freedom, democracy, and a lack of oppression for women?
Then there are the groups who show up for anything — and EVERYTHING — that is a lefty excuse to call for the destruction of America and her allies. You guessed it: the commies, ANSWER (but I repeat myself), and the LGBT crew all made an appearance.
Finally, in addition to the same old same old when it comes to the coalition of organizations that gather for these things, there was some terminology that is also, quite frankly, so played.
Jake will have some video up soon. Unfortunately, I have to report two things that happened which we were unable to get on video.
The first was an altercation that happened when we were across the river getting pictures of the Pro-Palestine crowd. The story as we heard it was that several of the anti-Israel folks got inside the pro-Israel police barricades and started pushing a couple of women around, and that one man was allegedly arrested. We’ll be sure to pass on any more info we might hear about that incident.
The second was a big “aaaawwwwww” for us: someone in the opposing crowd lit an Israeli flag and waved it around before a police officer put it out. We were situation such that we couldn’t get the camera in position and rolling quickly enough to capture the event on tape.
Hope you enjoyed the pics, and the same goes for the video when it’s up!
And here ya go…
